Advertisers are investing more money in video than ever. U.S. digital video ad spend is on pace to top $80 billion this year,1 according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). But that spend is now tied to a nagging question: where is the ad actually running, and does it even matter? The same research showed that 43% of advertisers report “somewhat” or no confidence in the quality of the CTV inventory they’re buying, even through trusted methods.1
In this new blog series, we will break down common misconceptions in the industry around inventory, data authenticity, media fragmentation, and more. Today, we start with premium inventory and the true value of campaign impressions.
The Myth: “All Impressions Are Created Equal.”
On paper, it sounds logical. An impression is an impression, right? If two platforms can deliver the same number of views, why pay more? Buy broad, buy cheap, and let scale do the work.
The challenge isn’t delivering more impressions. It’s identifying the impressions that build awareness and are most likely to move consumers from discovery to action.
The Reality: The Best Impressions Drive Outcomes.
News flash… not all impressions are created equal. Ads that run on poor or low-quality inventory drive weaker conversions and wastes advertising dollars, no matter how attractive the CPM price looks. Premium inventory, on the other hand, is an investment in quality ad environments, trusted reach, and reliable delivery.
“Premium” isn’t simply a marketing label; it’s a status earned when an impression meets a set of conditions. At Comcast Advertising, premium inventory is content that is:
- Brand-safe: Ads are run in appropriate, professionally produced content; not in user-generated content, where quality and context are less predictable.
- Accessed by real people: Ads are fraud-protected, which keeps bot traffic and invalid impressions from quietly chipping away at budget. Comcast Advertising’s platforms are fully protected.
- Distributed within a high-quality viewing experience: Ads show up in premium video experiences that provide carefully crafted ad loads in minimally disruptive environments. Ads are not skippable and are fully visible.
- Delivered seamlessly across screens and platforms: Reduced intermediaries between the buyer and viewer. At Comcast Advertising, our direct relationship with top TV programmers (11,000+ programs across 170 networks in 60+ markets) means that advertisers can run ads across screens and platforms in quality environments at scale.
As the buying ecosystem grows more fragmented, confidence in where ads run and who sees them has become a crucial differentiator.
Why This Matters: The Performance Gap Is Real and Measurable.
Ads delivered in premium environments drive stronger attention, higher brand recall, and better business outcomes. Comcast Advertising and third-party research found that:
- Brand-safe impressions deliver +233% higher conversions than non-brand-safe ones.2
- Unaided ad recall in premium environments is +58% higher than in non-premium ones.2
- 2 in 3 viewers have purchased a product they saw advertised within long-form premium content.2
- 82% of consumers say they’re more likely to buy from brands whose ads appear on content that’s safe, accurate, and trustworthy.2
In a February 2026 “Impression Gap” study, the VAB and TVision analyzed a year of viewership and eye-tracking data across 21 premium video platforms and YouTube. The study found that audiences watching premium video platforms were up to 20% more likely to keep their eyes on the screen, and co-viewing ran more than 30% higher than on YouTube.3 The same impression works harder in a premium environment.
Taking Great Inventory A Step Further with Data
Premium placement is only half the equation. Layering in first-party data is what transforms a well-placed impression into a precisely targeted one. Comcast Advertising’s first party-data combined with its direct relationships with top networks and publishers lets advertisers move past hoping an ad lands somewhere meaningful. Instead, advertisers can build campaigns that start with the right audience, in the right environment, and with a reach of 100+ million U.S. adults to draw from at the national, regional, or local level.
Because we’re connected to how audiences stream, watch, browse, and engage we have a deeper understanding of the behaviors that drive action. Outcomes+, our next gen targeting and full-funnel attribution solution, puts that intelligence to work, helping advertisers reach the audiences most likely to deliver results and measure the impact of every campaign. Through data-driven activation and attribution, advertisers can turn audience insights into measurable business outcomes. Making impressions drive results for your brand.
The Takeaway
Premium environments cost more for a reason. They perform better, they’re safer, and give advertisers confidence in where their ads ran and who saw them.
